This completely updated edition is written to teach 3D artists, designers, and animators how to add realism to their character's expressions. It begins by covering the anatomy of the human head, facial features, and facial muscles and progresses to cover recreating the human face and muscle structure in 3D and making it move in a realistic, believable fashion. It is filled with detailed instruction for lip synching and creating visual expressions for speech and sound under a variety of conditions (sad, happy, stuttering, etc.). It provides visual reference charts of morph targets for weighted human expressions, typical human phonemes, cartoon expressions, facial expressions, and just-for-fun cartoon expressions. This edition includes two new chapters covering 3ds Max and Maya. All of these techniques can also be applied to your own aliens, animals, creatures, and other animated creations. If you want your characters to have truly realistic facial expressions, you'll learn everything you need to know in this indispensable resource.

Production Rendering: Design and Implementation Review

Production Rendering: Design and Implementation
Average Reviews:

I won't hurt the rating by voting differently than the other two reviewers - I haven't read it! I wanted to check out this book because Amazon lists it as "1st Edition. edition (November 5, 2010)". It actually came out in 2004. I'm adding this "review" just so others are not fooled by this incorrect date.
For a newer book on production-quality rendering, you might also consider "Physically Based Rendering, Second Edition", which truly is from 2010 (the first edition is from 2004). Stephenson's book is focused on RenderMan, which is beginning to show its age and limitations; "Physically Based Rendering" (PRT) is entirely ray-based, vs. micropolygons (plus rays tacked on, as an extension). If you want to understand RenderMan's algorithms, I suspect "Production Rendering" is the book for you. If I was insane enough to create a production renderer from scratch, I'd write a pure ray tracer as of today, and so would find PRT of more interest.

Mastering Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2010 Review

Mastering Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2010
Average Reviews:

There seem to be two types of Max books. The ones with lots and lots of text that are hard to use as a reference - they are too cryptic to understand and generally the organization of the Bibles still leave me baffled. On the other end there are more tutorial/image based books, some are decent for what they are, but it is usually difficult to find a good blend of information and how to's. This book is more like the 3ds Max 2010 Bible, and although it covers much of Max, the glaring exceptions are the lack of information on rigging and biped - there is very little beyond the basic how to do a simple keyframe of a camera animation in this giant book.
One of the authors of this book wrote a really good reference/tutorial book called Master Visually 3ds Max 8. I still see my students from time to time carrying round a used copy of this book that they got at the school bookstore. It is starting to show its age - mainly because of the changes to the interface - but seemed to be an excellent intro book because the tutorials were limited to one or two pages, and the text was direct and to the point.
Regrettable this book is closer to the 3DS Max Bible on the continuum. It has a good amount of information, but it is really dense with text, which now a days with all the online video tutorials, are being used less and less. I wish McFarland would have gone back and revised his Max 8 book. That is what those learning Max really need. For a general introduction book I refer students to Maestri's 3ds Max at a Glancethe book has lots of pictures, provides a good overview of the entire program, and only suffers from tutorials that I find difficult to complete. The other book I would recommend for those new to Max would be Essential 3ds Max 2008. Although earlier versions of this series were lacking, this one got it right as a good intro book on Max. There aren't any color pictures, but its tutorials and information are more in-depth than Maestri's book.
So if you want an up to date 3DS Max book, you like reading and having a Max book that can be used as a reference, this is the book for you.

Introducing 3ds Max 9: 3D for Beginners Review

Introducing 3ds Max 9: 3D for Beginners
Average Reviews:

At first I thought to myself that this book was going to be your typical "BAD" computer book where you have to get up, look for people who know how to use 3Ds Max or you would either look for some written or video tutorials online to get you up and started running this software. So I honestly didn't bother buying the book at first until one day by coincidence my colleague happens to have the exact same book that I was looking at Amazon 5 days ago. He told me that the book is an easy read especially with the lingo that the author uses in this book. I didn't want to believe it however; as soon as I borrowed the book just 1 day I have literally completed 4 chapters of this AMAZING book! There was no question about it and I had to get hold of a copy of my own.
One of the best things that the user will be introduced in this book is that the author will get the user feet wet into the realm of CG in Chapter 2 where the user will create a simple animation and from there the author then explain how the CG world works today and how a user should be well equipped.
Honestly this is by far one of the best introductions to CG especially how to use a complex software as 3Ds Max 9. All I can say is that this book is only for the Novice and not for the semi or advanced users. However it still acts as a good reference book for the semi / advanced users.
Oh and One last thing I should mention. This may not seem important to you but to me it is. I only believe that a good computer book has to have color throughout the whole book because it makes the book fun to read with colors. But now I am going to have to change my belief on that because this book is completely in black and white and STILL the book surprises me to how EASY it is to read and to follow along through the CD exercise that accompanies this book.

Digital Modeling of Material Appearance (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) Review

Digital Modeling of Material Appearance (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the future of Computer Graphics. The book begins with a solid, foundational overview of light properties and their current forms of implementation. The book then gracefully develops the more advanced concepts and smoothly transitions into digital modeling of material appearance. In this subject of light there is no better compendium of knowledge, especially one that can educate due to its salient command of technical language that never obscures the concept underneath.

Computer graphics systems are capable of generating stunningly realistic images of objects that have never physically existed. In order for computers to create these accurately detailed images, digital models of appearance must include robust data to give viewers a credible visual impression of the depicted materials. In particular, digital models demonstrating the nuances of how materials interact with light are essential to this capability. This is the first comprehensive work on the digital modeling of material appearance: it explains how models from physics and engineering are combined with keen observation skills for use in computer graphics rendering.Written by the foremost experts in appearance modeling and rendering, this book is for practitioners who want a general framework for understanding material modeling tools, and also for researchers pursuing the development of new modeling techniques. The text is not a "how to" guide for a particular software system. Instead, it provides a thorough discussion of foundations and detailed coverage of key advances.Practitioners and researchers in applications such as architecture, theater, product development, cultural heritage documentation, visual simulation and training, as well as traditional digital application areas such as feature film, television, and computer games, will benefit from this much needed resource.ABOUT THE AUTHORSJulie Dorsey and Holly Rushmeier are professors in the Computer Science Department at Yale University and co-directors of the Yale Computer Graphics Group. François Sillion is a senior researcher with INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique), and director of its Grenoble RhÃne-Alpes research center. * First comprehensive treatment of the digital modeling of material appearance;* Provides a foundation for modeling appearance, based on the physics of how light interacts with materials, how people perceive appearance, and the implications of rendering appearance on a digital computer;* An invaluable, one-stop resource for practitioners and researchers in a variety of fields dealing with the digital modeling of material appearance.

I read the book " Introduction to solid modelling" & I liked it because it gives a first hand exposure to solid modelling to the engineering professionals who are on the brink of trying to understand solid modelling & its uses in their respective area of applications. It also helps the "C" savvy engineering application developers to understand the intricacies in developing a cad package using solid modelling techniques.
