(More customer reviews)I feel like I got a college textbook and not a craft book. I say that with absolutely positive feelings! I mean, if this were some college course, the book would have been $75.00 and I'd feel like I'd finally gotten a book I was going to keep.
I couldn't even describe how detailed this book is. I feel like I can actually do this figure thing. I mean, every step is laid out for you. Every SINGLE step. There is nothing left to the imagination, no question left unanswered. I mean, there are instructions within instructions within variations of instructions... How to sculpt different ethnic groups, the male figure, the female figure, the musculature, the hands--how to make your own eyeballs, for heaven's sake! Katherine Dewey shows that you can make every single tool you'll use, which I still haven't done yet, but need to do since I think most of her handmade tools are better than the ones I could buy.
I don't think I could really adequately express my excitement over having this book. I have so desired for so long to be able to sculpt figures that were beautiful and believable, and I feel like I can finally do it!

I started paging through it and couldn't believe the detailed photos and easy instructions. These designs are to die for, Sunny cottage is simply sweet, Hope's Place is dreamy, James' Place is masculine, and there are many more to numerous to mention, there is something for everyones. I could hardly wait to try my first one, which I started that night and was amazed at how easy it was. My husband looked through the book and couldn't believe I didn't pay more for such detail and instruction. I have bought similar books on polymer clay with not even half as much design, detail and instruction for twice the price. If you love polymer clay as much as I do, you won't be unhappy with this book.

(More customer reviews)I wanted to mention a little omething about the reader wndering about page 5 in this book. The writing does stop in mid - sentence but if you want to know how long to bake, just read the individual instructions for each craft and you will find the exact baking time for your project.
I would strongly suggest anyone who would like to work with polymer clay to buy this book! There are plenty of wonderful projects to keep anyone busy for a long time. If you run out of clay, most local craft stores will carry more - either Sculpey III or other sculpey brands like Presto which is just about the same. Buy this book and enjoy!

(More customer reviews)I was so happy to participate in making some of the projects in this book and with Irene Dean writing it, I knew the book was naturally going to be good.
But, when I received it, I was totally floored at the quality - hardcover, great paper, clear pictures, well-written instructions. It was so much better than I'd even anticipated.
This book was written for someone much younger than I am, but I found it completely entertaining, throughout. Very thorough "basics" section, including a look at making simple canes, then on to the projects. Lively and colorful from cover to cover.
Jazzy, upbeat writing, hip kids in artful demonstration, wonderful photography, lots of humor and cool fonts surround each of the thirty projects. There are beginner items to advanced - critters, jewelry, things to make for gifts, from simple to sophisticated - kids are going to absolutely love this book! And just in time to give to a young person before the appearance of "summer doldrums," too. :)
But, I don't think its appeal is limited to the 8-14 years-old age bracket because IMO, most adults would find it fun, too. I'd recommend this one to beginning clayers of any age.
Congratulations to Irene and her terrific editor for a fabulous, fun book!

(More customer reviews)Kids are going to love this book - so many wonderful ideas for making their own gifts for family and friends. I think a lot of adults are going to like this book, too. Every project begins with simple steps, but the results are polished and beautiful.
Thirty projects, lots of great basic info about colors, color mixing, making shapes, combining shapes, changing expressions, etc.
Everything is illustrated in imaginative ways - even the basic color wheel is a whimsical thing.
The elves are adorable and the dragon beautiful - a huge range of critters and creatures in between - all appear to be quite do-able.
I think this would be a great book even for an adult who wants to try sculpting/modelling - you'll get some great inspiration from this! Plus, the "story-process" in the second half of the book is terrific and all the pictures are just gorgeous! :)

Modeling with Polymer Clay (Artist's Library series #33) Review

(More customer reviews)I recently discoverd this book by David Kracov and had to purchase it to see how close I could come to duplicating his sculpting technique. So far I am very happy with the results, and considering the fact that he uses a clay that I have not used in the past, I consider this a good selling point for his book. I would not recommend this book for someone just getting into clay sculpting as he leaves out some vital information (or so I believe) and some of his instructions are very vague. But if you've learned the basics of sculpting characters from another source or are a natural artist, I think you should be able to glean some very useful design concepts from this book. Mr. Kracov is very talented and I hope he publishes another book soon. I will be watching and waiting for one.
