Modeling and Control of Dynamic Systems teaches the basic concepts of control systems analysis and design. The book first focuses on understanding the basic building blocks of the dynamic systems surrounding us - electrical, fluid, mechanical, and thermal - and presents both traditional and modern tools for analyzing and predicting their behavior. Feedback control is presented so readers understand how to develop controllers to affect system behavior. MATLAB/Simulink is a powerful and easy-to-use software used in the text to troubleshoot, analyze and design dynamic systems.

A great introduction to control theory. However, it would help if you know something about differential equations. I read Ogata's book on control (over 900 pages) from cover to cover twice and still could not figure out exactly what state variables are. This book explains things very well but you do need to do the problems at the end of each chapter. The use of "free-body" diagrams is a great idea.Ogata's book is great for explaining a lot of the details but this book explains the important things in a concise but easy to understand manner. I now finally understand how to draw a system diagram by starting from the inputs for each separate system. Everything is brought together -- system diagrams, transfer functions, state variables, the purpose for LaPlace transforms, and input-output models. This is not a book about control theory and it is covered in only the last two chapters but if you are taking, or going to take, a course in control theory, read this book first. It will save you a lot of frustration and bewilderment.

This textbook is ideal for an undergraduate course in Engineering System Dynamics and Controls. It is intended to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of the process of creating mathematical (and computer-based) models of physical systems. The material is restricted to lumped parameter models, which are those models in which time is the only independent variable. It assumes a basic knowledge of engineering mechanics and ordinary differential equations. The new edition has expanded topical coverage and many more new examples and exercises.

I have taken the Modeling course at UT Arlington with Dr. Woods (the author), the book covers modeling techniques for Electrical, mechanical, heat tranfer..systems. it has a practical review of differenitial equations. Also has Practical simulation information. and it is great to keep as a reference.

This book reflects the state-of-the-art and current trends in modeling and simulation. The book provides comprehensive coverage of 1) the modeling techniques of the major types of dynamic engineering systems, 2) the solution techniques for the resulting differential equations for linear and nonlinear systems, and 3) the attendant mathematical procedures related to the presentation of dynamic systems and determination of their time and frequency response characteristics. It explains in detail how to select all of the system component parameter values for static and dynamic performance specifications and limits. For anyone interested in systems dynamics, modeling, and interdisciplinary systems.

This is not a new cover on an older book. Having enjoyed Beltrami's first book I was glad to see a second. The new continues the subject of modeling not math. Well written, the author's book ties the conceptual difficulites of the subjects with the necessary math to get the point accross and guide the reader to new frontiers of insight again in the sense of the physical model not the math. This is a very important point! One does not lose sight of the over-all objective as with some math intensive proof types. The beauty of the work is getting the necessary across with the least. One disappointment though. The book was to short. I hope the author continues another work. Perhaps some more indepth of previous covered material. All examples and problems are easily solved in Mathcad, which already has the depth but sometimes not the explanation.
