From Observations to Simulations: A Conceptual Introduction to Weather And Climate Modeling Review

From Observations to Simulations: A Conceptual Introduction to Weather And Climate Modeling
Average Reviews:

This book explains why we cannot rely on observations and experiments to understand and predict weather and climate. It discusses how models and ensembles are necessary in atmospheric science. The book is written for non-scientists and is well done. As an atmospheric science student, I found this analysis very useful in an environment where model use is presumed rather than justified. It is translated from Italian so there are some translation problems. It is also wordy and repetitious in some sections. Overall, it is a useful summary of numerical weather and climate modeling.

From Observations to Simulations leads us on a fascinating journey through the methods used for the scientific analysis of complex systems such as the atmosphere and the Earth system: from meteorology and climatology, as observational sciences, to the development of models and the use of computers as virtual laboratories. In plain, accessible language, avoiding technicalities, but highlighting the conceptually meaningful aspects, the book describes this "Copernican revolution" in meteorology and climatology, a change in methodological paradigm that rigorously tests the definition of some classical concepts, such as "causality" and "prediction." This is the first book that guides the general public (and sets the specialists thinking) through research on complex systems which is contributing to a change in our outlook on nature.

I got two MDT4 books and I am very surprised how good this book is. At the first glance, the other MDT book appeared to have a nicer cover, but that is all. This book, Parametric Modeling with MDT 4, covered the important aspects of how to use MDT with practical examples. The other book covered only about 40% of the material covered in this book. I strongly recommend this book. The content of this book is definitely superior.

This book contains a series of ten tutorial style lessons designed to introduce Mechanical Desktop Version 4, solid modeling, and parametric modeling. It uses a hands-on, exercise-intensive approach to all the import parametric modeling techniques and concepts. The lessons guide the user from constructing basic shapes to building intelligent solid models and creating multi-view drawings. Each book comes bundled with a CD presenting an audio/visual version of the tutorial exercises contained in the book. A voice overlay explains the interface, menu picks, and design activities while models are created. The CD presentation is not interactive and is independent of Mechanical Desktop, meaning Mechanical Desktop is not required in order to use the CD.

I am no climate expert. This book changed my life in more ways than one. 1. I no longer drive a car. I sold it, craigslist for $500 dollars US. 2. I divorced my Husband. 3. I decided to live a life of limited means. No electricity, No manufactured products from overseas. I make my own toothpaste, how about that. This book, although not written to be romantic made me fall in love with this planet all over again. Just like we did in our first biology class.
I could write more but I feel this book captures the essence of the climate change problems. It's also a bargain buy!

Global climate change poses new risks to the worldeconomy. The unique dependence of the farm economyto the agroclimate makes it especially vulnerable toshifts in global weather patterns caused by globalwarming. Traditionaleconomic analyses on the topic have not paidadequate attention to critical elements such asproducer adaptation and adequately representing environmental and market risk. In this book, Dr. Kanakasabai integrates advanced crop simulation with economic decision modeling under uncertainty to explore farm adaptation under global climate change. He demonstrates through use of three increasinglyrealistic scenarios, the magnitude of climate shifts, potential for farm adaptation and the resulting impacts on farm revenues. The decision analysis employs advanced mathematical programming approaches which should be especially useful forrisk analysts, agricultural experts and policymakers.

For disclaimer purposes several sources mentioned in this book are outdated. It's the nature of the hobby business and the nature of the Internet.
What is actually relevant though, is DETAILED information on the type or modified tank you want to build. What is meant by detailed is not only pictures but, clear line drawings and explanations as well. Want to make a model of the very first Tiger tank in the field? There is enough information in the book to do it. For my purposes an early mid-production Tiger I variant was wanted. There is plenty of information available to build it. Don't know what German tool clasps look like or were used? Want to know where wing nuts were used? This book has the necessary illustrated and written details. These few examples just touch the surface of the subject.
Again, if you're going to build a model Tiger tank this is the FIRST reference book to buy - period.

Macroeconomic Issues: Their Relationship to Fiscal Policy Formulation, Forecasting, Prediction, and Computer Simulation Modeling Review

Macroeconomic Issues: Their Relationship to Fiscal Policy Formulation, Forecasting, Prediction, and Computer Simulation Modeling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Macroeconomic Issues is an economics primer that walks students through economic theory from early historical models through current economic trends such as gaming models, forecasting, and the current economic downturn. Author Nicholas Jewczyn (JEFF-sin) serves up an eminently readable but brief explanation of macroeconomic theory that is a must-read for any student of economics, particularly those who want a concise-but-thorough explanation of the field.
Jewczyn avoids the dismal science in his historical survey of economic thought in the first section of the book. His comparison of the three historical schools of economics, the classicist model, the Keynesian model, and the monetarist model is understandable even to a reader with a non-economic background. He explains the foundational principles of macroeconomics such as Adam Smith and the Invisible Hand, John Maynard Keynes' arguments for interventionist government economic policy and Milton Friedman's advocacy of private sector ascension in his monetarist theory. Jewczyn provides a fair treatment of each of the historical schools of thought and even includes commentaries by contemporary theorists who point out the strengths and limitations of the historical theories.

The second section of the book begins with an annotated bibliography of current research in macroeconomics. This section transitions comfortably from the historical background to the current state of the art. This section provides a competent overview for students of economics who want to understand the topic in an afternoon. This section requires the reader to slow down in order to fully understand all the new information being presented. It is also helpful for a reader to know some economic terms in order to follow all of the ideas. The concepts are understandable, especially with re-reading, even if the terms are unfamiliar. With time, even a naïve reader can grasp the current trends in economics.

The third section of this book is a tightly-argued application of economic theory to risk theory and econometrics. It analyzes the assumptions of current models and applies them to many theories of computer modeling. A reader needs an adequate background of economic theory in order to fully appreciate this third section, but the previous chapters provide the tools to apply to an understanding of this rather complex topic.

Macroeconomics can be a very dense topic, especially for someone new to the theories. Macroeconomic Issues by Nicholas Jewczyn may require more than one reading in order to fully appreciate its scope, but it is a rare book that can take the reader from 0-60 in 200 pages. Anyone with more than a passing interest in economic theory can use this book to become conversant on the topic in a very short time. This book is especially recommended for economics students who want to get a jumpstart on their education. It is an ideal complement to any economics course.

Many consumers have been mystified by Economics in general and the economy in particular. This book finally lifts the veil of Economics and exposes the public to: the foundational theory of Economics by the primary theorists in the field; current, cutting-edge research; and some practical uses of the subject matter by businesspeople, the government and consumers. This book is a "must-read" for those interested in the foundations of our present economy and the knowledge necessary to understand the future of economic growth.

Pro-E has attempted to mask their never-ending menus with a pretty face lift this go 'round. This makes it hard for old users to adjust, but let's new users jump right in... at least at first. After awhile you'll realize how hard it is to memorize all of Pro-E's menu abbreviations! A textbook is a must, and this one does a decent job.
This book leads you through both 3D part creation and machinist' drawings. It also teaches the user some of the in-depth features of Pro-E in regards to storing drawing configurations and etc. Book also covers motion/kinematic analysis.
Book actually has a few errors on the spur & helical gear walk-thrus. If you look for them and think it through you can figure it out - or just ask your professor what the correct numbers are.

If you are fairly new to 3d studio max ( like myself ) or perhaps even an intermediate, and you want to jump ahead into organic modeling at a fairly fast pace, then I highly recommend this cd. I found this cd to be excellent. The cd has been put together in an easy to follow and understand manner. This training cd has opened up so much of my ability to model. Through the cd, I was shown and explained how the modeling tools in 3d Studio Max are properly used. Before purchasing this cd, I had approximately 10-12 weeks training at a multimedia institution. Check out the work standard I had achieved within a month of purchasing this training cd by Tim Kugler at his Interactive Training CD web site. I also found the support that he gave me invaluable.

UML 2.0 in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly)) Review

UML 2.0 in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This is the book that UML In a Nutshell should have been.
Several years ago I picked up the original UML In a Nutshell with high hopes; I didn't bother reading much of it in the bookstore because (after all) the book was an O'Reilly. It had an animal on the cover; quality was assured. I snapped it up and went home. It turned out to be the one of the worst computer books I'd ever bought, and many of the Amazon reviews agreed with me. I wrote my own scathing (but rather funny) review, and to be honest I don't know what happened to the book itself, I no longer cared.
A few weeks ago I received email from an editor at O'Reilly asking if I was the person who had posted that review, and would I be interested in a copy of their re-written book on UML 2.0? The book arrived a few days ago, and I've spent a couple hours going through it. (In the interest of disclosure, please note that I did not pay for my copy).
To put it mildly, UML 2.0 In a Nutshell is a vast improvement. I don't know how to emphasize this: It's like waking up from a bad nightmare of Throgzaks-are-after-you (and of course, you can't run) to realize that everything is okay and it was just the cat sleeping on your face. It is a huge relief that O'Reilly recognized their error and decided to fix it.
This book is smaller, more succinct and to the point. The authors dive into meaty subject material right away, starting with the stuff that most engineers are likely to use. The writing is pleasantly conversational, targetted to a technical (rather than a managerial) audience, and the subject matter is well organized. A challenge in grokking the UML is that it is a "wad" of interrelated concepts, and the book has sufficient forward references ("You'll learn more about X in chapter 4") that I felt comfortable just forging ahead. The diagrams are clear and meaningful, and there is (gasp) actual humor from time to time.
I get the impression that O'Reilly's first UML book was published in a hurry just to "get something out there." I have the impression that they took their time getting this one right. There is almost no comparison between the two; this is the book to get. Recommended.

System developers have used modeling languages for decades to specify, visualize, construct, and document systems. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is one of those languages.UML makes it possible for team members to collaborate by providing a common language that applies to a multitude of different systems. Essentially, it enables you to communicate solutions in a consistent, tool-supported language.

Today, UML has become the standard method for modeling software systems, which means you're probably confronting this rich and expressive language more than ever before. And even though you may not write UML diagrams yourself, you'll still need to interpret diagrams written by others.

UML 2.0 in a Nutshell from O'Reilly feels your pain. It's been crafted for professionals like you who must read, create, and understand system artifacts expressed using UML.Furthermore, it's been fully revised to cover version 2.0 of the language.

This comprehensive new edition not only provides a quick-reference to all UML 2.0 diagram types, it also explains key concepts in a way that appeals to readers already familiar with UML or object-oriented programming concepts.

Topics include:

The role and value of UML in projects
The object-oriented paradigm and its relation to the UML
An integrated approach to UML diagrams
Class and Object, Use Case, Sequence, Collaboration, Statechart, Activity, Component, and Deployment Diagrams
Extension Mechanisms
The Object Constraint Language (OCL)
If you're new to UML, a tutorial with realistic examples has even been included to help you quickly familiarize yourself with the system.
