Data Envelopment Analysis: Modeling Operational Processes And Measuring Productivity Review

Data Envelopment Analysis: Modeling Operational Processes And Measuring Productivity
Average Reviews:

I have several books on DEA. This is the best text book for DEA. The models are well explained and I was able to learn the basic DEA models and their advances by myself. The spreadsheet modeling part is also very useful -- I can build and solve the models. If you are new to DEA, this is definitely the book you want to have.

The current book introduces the methodology of data envelopment analysis (DEA). DEA uses mathematical programming techniques and models to evaluate the performance of peer units (e.g., bank branches, hospitals and schools) in terms of multiple inputs used and multiple outputs produced. DEA examines the resources available to each unit and monitors the "conversion" of these resources (inputs) into the desired outputs. The book gives an overview of the various models from the literature, and the geometric interpretations provided permit the reader to go beyond the mathematics. Various topics are covered relating to important practical considerations. These include dealing with time series data as well as methods for restricting multipliers. The book will thus provide students, researchers and practitioners with a solid understanding of the methodology, its uses and its potential.

I was so happily surprised by how good this book was as I went through the projects. It is concise, thorough and never boring.
My only nit picky complaint is with the publisher: they used very poor quality paper on this. Why they did that, I can't imagine
as it is the best I've read on enhancing one's CAD programs. And it is up to speed with the latest CS5.

Computer Modeling of Chemical Reactions in Enzymes and Solutions (Wiley Professional) Review

Computer Modeling of Chemical Reactions in Enzymes and Solutions (Wiley Professional)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has become a classic in the field. While we now have more modern and efficient methods (like DFT) the basic approach remains the same, so it is still worth reading.
The book comes with source code in Fortran. Its main problem is that you cannot download the code in the book from the Internet, but you can get revised, more modern versions, so it's not that bad after all. The source in the book is rather limited, oriented to illustrating the points and the calculations, but if you combine it with some other reference, like Allen-Tildesley's (the other major classic), it is enough to proceed with your own implementation (should you be interested in doing one).
The math I found a bit difficult to follow as it does not match similar approaches in other quantum mechanics or molecular mechanics books, but once you get used to it, it is OK.
Coverage is fair for the date it was written and sticks to the title topic covering it very well. It is worth reading to understand many of the modern approaches, how they work and what they mean. Actually, if you are interested in this topic (enzymatic reactions) your only other resource would be to gather a number of other books and combine their contents yourself in your mind. A lot more work than having this one.
To a large extent, modern (as of 2010) work still relies mostly on the approaches exposed in this book, so it is bang for the buck, but it would be advisable to complement it with some readings on modern DFT approaches as these are now slowly taking over the semiempirical approaches described here.

Integrated Practice in Architecture: Mastering Design-Build, Fast-Track, and Building Information Modeling Review

Integrated Practice in Architecture: Mastering Design-Build, Fast-Track, and Building Information Modeling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The term "integrated practice" was quickly dispatched in 2007 when the California Council of the AIA presented "Integrated Project Delivery - A Working Definition" at the AIA National Convention - and for good reason. Integrated practice is an internal affair for each of the Owner, Architect and Contractor. Integrated Project Delivery brings all parties involved in the development of a project into the discussion. In addition, for the time being - and for some time into the future - any practice is going to involve both traditional and integrated project delivery. Finally, I found the book confusing in the way it tends to equate BIM with Integrated Practice, when the two are certainly seperable, if not independent. I don't know of a better book out there at present, but I wish I'd waited for one before buying.

Recombinant Urbanism: Conceptual Modeling in Architecture, Urban Design and City Theory Review

Recombinant Urbanism: Conceptual Modeling in Architecture, Urban Design and City Theory
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pragmatic exploitation of cities and their dwellers may be an ineradicable disease that drives the squalor and eventual decline of urban agglommerations, but those who take on diagnosis of the seemingly incurable become saviors if successful. There have been only a handful of modern-era thinkers with the knowledge, insight and creativity on what's wrong with the design of cities and what might be done to make it better, Viollet le Duc, Lewis Mumford, Kevin Lynch among them. It is an unexpected pleasure to encounter a new deep thinker standing on these giants' shoulders in Grahame Shane's magisterial "Recombinant Urbanism: Conceptual Modeling in Architecture, Urban Design and City Theory." The volume is comprehensive on urbanism, historically and intellectually, and will amply reward the student, scholar and professional who reads it in parts or most beneficially, in whole -- more than once. Prepare to be highly educated by this book, not merely advised what to do to get or keep a job or get a project funded by public taxation. If read and comprehended by urban policy makers it will contribute to their escape from real estate development hell, or if not that, it will arm honorable officials against the weasels who want to claim cities as their own profitmaking playpens. Shane wonderfully reminds what it is like to learn from a deeply thoughtful scholar offering open wisdom compared to a city-exploiter pitching secret schemes. Still, one might imagine land developers and good buddy officials searching Shane's compendium for nuggets to use in their next snake oil presentation to suspicious citizen groups rightfully fed up with unceasing demands for bailouts.

This book provides a simple but comprehensive framework for the emerging academic discipline of urban design, from its origins in Europe and America, to contemporary issues of imagery, finance and marketing in an age of globalisation
There is currently no contemporary textbook for urban design that includes a general history and theory of the subject.
Internationally, urban design is more and more becoming a core subject taught in architecture schools. The AIA (US) and the RIBA (UK) both require undergraduates and graduates to study the urban dimension of architectural design. On a wider scale, in Europe, the EU is developing a common architectural curriculum, which includes an urban component for under-graduates. The situation is similar in schools across Asia and Australia.
Aimed at both students and teachers, this book provides a simple and accessible framework, from the origins of urban design and the main techniques developed to deal with the design of fragments of cities, to participatory planning processes, codes, imagery, finance and marketing. Finally, it proposes an innovative vision of contemporary practice based on the work of leading actors and projects in the field.
This book is set to become the key textbook at undergraduate and graduate levels
It is written in an accessible and direct tone, and highly illustrated with many colour and black and white diagrams
It includes a general history and theory of urban design and provides an up-to-date account of contemporary urban conditions

Praise for Recombinant Urbanism:
"Documents a major intellectual advance…eagerly awaited by academics and practitioners all around the world… should become a standard text for schools of architecture and urbanism." Leon Van Schaik, Innovation Professor of Architecture, RMIT, Australia
" …both unique and instrumentally positive. The book is the result of many years of research and writing, and is a small masterpiece in urban studies. It has already proved its worth in the teaching of urban studies, at Columbia, the AA, the Bartlett School, and Cooper Union, to mention only a few of the universities where Dr Shane has had a powerful influence...It is, indeed, one of the very best manuscripts I have read in the field in the last few years." Anthony Vidler, Professor and Dean, Irwin S Chanin School of Architecture, Cooper Union, New York, USA
"I can say without hesitation that I fully endorse Grahame's work…the issues it covers are highly topical and such a book would indeed be widely read by architecture students, urban designers and planners." Colin Fournier, Professor of Architecture &Urbanism, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK
"Of great necessity for undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists and professionals in urban planning and design [This] publication will certainly inspire work with city models in a wide range of practice." Henrik W Jensen, Associate Professor in Town Planning, Aarhus School of Architecture, The Netherlands
"A very important book. Shane … has made legible and sensible the reams of recent urban discourse for a general college reader. Because of this labor-intensive effort, this book will be accessible by undergrad architecture programs as well as graduate seminars in urban design and planning. Additionally there is a big interest in UD and UP theory in ecology and social science now, and because of Grahame's generous writing style the book will cross over to these other disciplines. … I can also speak to the international interest in this book; … again Shane has made important urban theories and thinking more widely available to an international student audience. … The legacy the book will have (will be in) convincing people that the design of cities matters, not in the overbearing and over-controlling sense of new urbanism, but in reinforcing the multiple possibilities of contemporary life. Brian McGrath, Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture, Columbia University, USA

This is by far the best book on the topic I have found. If you plan to design or model any vehicle, but in particular a hybrid or electric vehicle, I recommend you own this book.
Specifically, a large portion of the mathematical models required for design-level calculations are available directly from the text. The text is very concise, making good use of external citations to remain thorough. Finally, the optimization case studies are very helpful in understanding hybrid design goals.
Highly Recommended for engineers and students with some experience in vehicles.

Autonomous Robots: Modeling, Path Planning, and Control Review

Autonomous Robots: Modeling, Path Planning, and Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fahimi's book can be considered a specialisation of the recent Springer Springer Handbook of Robotics. The current book explains the control systems theory behind having a robot operate independently. The kinematics can be quite involved, and you should already have a good background in matrix algebra.
Important special cases treated include have multiple mobile robots and planning their interdependent paths. These are in the presence of various potential energy functions. In some scenarios the paths are on a two dimensional surface, like land or at sea level. While in others, the paths are fully three dimensional, as for flying robots or those under the sea.
The concept of an autopilot for maintaining constant velocity on a surface is seen as an important but fundamentally simple situation.
Each chapter ends with a short set of problems; making the text suitable for a university course.

It is at least two decades since the conventional robotic manipulators have become a common manufacturing tool for different industries, from automotive to pharmaceutical. The proven benefits of utilizing robotic manipulators for manufacturing in different industries motivated scientists and researchers to try to extend the applications of robots to many other areas by inventing several new types of robots other than conventional manipulators. The new types of robots can be categorized in two groups; redundant (and hyper-redundant) manipulators, and mobile (ground, marine, and aerial) robots. These groups of robots, known as advanced robots, have more freedom for their mobility, which allows them to do tasks that the conventional manipulators cannot do.Engineers have taken advantage of the extra mobility of the advanced robots to make them work in constrained environments, ranging from limited joint motions for redundant (or hyper-redundant) manipulators to obstacles in the way of mobile (ground, marine, and aerial) robots.Since these constraints usually depend on the work environment, they are variable. Engineers have had to invent methods to allow the robots todeal with a variety of constraints automatically. A robot that is equipped with those methods is called an Autonomous Robot.Autonomous Robots: Kinematics, Path Planning, and Control covers the kinematics and dynamic modeling/analysis of Autonomous Robots, as well as the methods suitable for their control. The text is suitable for mechanical and electrical engineers who want to familiarize themselves with methods of modeling/analysis/control that have been proven efficient through research.

Stop Staring: Facial Modeling and Animation Done Right Review

Stop Staring: Facial Modeling and Animation Done Right
Average Reviews:

Brilliant concepts and discussion of details, but somewhat slow in painting the big picture. He never really comes out and says it, so I will. The end result is a control rig for 40 blend shapes, each painstakingly hand drawn and tuned. The state of the art doesn't allow shortcuts; I don't think it ever can or will. If you can accept that all 40 shapes are needed to model the range of human facial expression, this book is for you. Osipa makes a compelling argument that each is necessary; guides you through the modeling to make it possible; and wraps up with an elegant rig to control and manage them all. The result is a talking head, simply amazing in its range and control of nuance. Still, 40 heads per character is a huge investment. Is it worth "Doing Right?" Or can you continue to fake it? Buy the book; play with the rig; and find out for yourself.

I'm an instructional designer and I've chosen to use this book as both for a text in classes I instruct and as a handbook for working with faculty members at my university. The book focuses on ways to help students think better using technology tools, many of which are commonly available (such as spreadsheets). Many such books focus on ways to use technology first, with practical applications for teaching and learning second. Not so in this case. If you have to buy just one book on instructional technology, this is the one.

A Practical Guide to SysML: The Systems Modeling Language (The MK/OMG Press) Review

A Practical Guide to SysML: The Systems Modeling Language (The MK/OMG Press)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Often, you can tell the value of a book by what shape it's in. My copy of A Practical Guide to SysML is pretty beat up. Not only does it have a lot of my own scribbling in the margins and blue and yellow highlighting (blue for things to come back and skim and yellow for things to absolutely visit again), it has coffee, peach and other various stains. This book resides in my brief case (my satchel bag) and goes with me ("A Good Companion") when I have to accompany my wife on errands (if I am 30 minutes in any place I will read a passage or two). With this book and an iPod, I can handle anything including long waits in any airport or any delays anywhere.
Sandy and the team do an outstanding job of introducing the reader into one of the most important new System Engineering tools available today; SysML. As pointed out by others, it's not just about software anymore, it often about architectures and the enterprise. As the trends in system development move from platform centric to NetCentric, as work for organizations moves from individuals to collaborative enterprise efforts and as we all try to improve our processes and add value to collaborative efforts, a model of "what we're doing" becomes so important. The team does an outstanding job of presenting the concept of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) in Chapter 2 and providing a great example to follow in the subsequent chapters. Throughout the book, the explanation of the diagrams and concepts are thorough and easy to understand. I thank the authors for making it interesting and relevant.
For those just starting in the field, this book is an outstanding accompaniment to any of the SysML CASE tools that are emerging. In fact, I highly recommend to anybody who is going to be working in the System Engineering field (be it automotive, aerospace, civil engineering, architecture, software, disaster relief, etc.) to keep a copy of this book handy in case you get delayed some place and want make use of some spare time.

Post Scrip (Feb 09) - I had the great fortune of attending a two day intense INCOSE sponsored tutorial on SysML taught by Sandy in Old Town Pasadena Nov 08. Wow, what a drink from the knowledge fire hose. Sandy's insight in model organization (using block diagrams for domain modeling) of complex projects was just one stunning eye opener. If anybody gets a chance to attend of one these, do it.

Systems engineers and architects must understand how all the parts of a system work together to satisfy its requirements. SysML is a general purpose graphical modeling language used to specify, analyze, and design systems that may include hardware, software, and personnel. It allows engineers to describe how a system interacts with its environment, and how its parts must interact to achieve the desired system behavior and performance. The SysML model provides a shared view of the system, enabling a design team to surface issues early and prevent problems that would otherwise delay development and degrade design quality. Since SysML is based on UML, it also facilitates integration between systems and software development. SysML is now being adopted by companies across a broad range of industry, including Aerospace and Defense, Automotive, and IT System Developers. This book provides a comprehensive and practical guide for modeling systems with SysML. It includes a full description of the language along with a quick reference guide, and shows how the language can be applied to specify, analyze, and design systems. It contains examples to help readers understand how SysML can be used in practice. The book also includes guidance on how an organization or project can transition to model based systems engineering using SysML, with considerations for processes, methods, tools, and training. *The authoritative guide for understanding and applying SysML*Authored by the foremost experts on the language*Language description, examples, and quick reference guide included

Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis: Modeling Change and Event Occurrence Review

Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis: Modeling Change and Event Occurrence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is, bar none, the best book on longitudinal analysis in social sciences.
The book has three outstanding features that make it the must-have for researchers who conduct longitudinal studies. First, the book has numerous examples that use data from real studies, collected by prominent scholars in this area. With the help of the accompanying website at UCLA, you will learn how to set up data files, which is crucial in longitudinal analysis. The sample codes and data files in SAS, SPSS, Stata, MLwiN, Mplus, HLM, and Splus will allow you to replicate the analyses. The authors use every effort to explain the results in plain, understandable language. They use a lot of graphs and tables to compare different nested models and help you to choose the one that best describes your data. It feels like you have an excellent tutor by your side when you are reading this book.
Second, the coverage of this book is comprehensive. Part I covers the regular growth curve modeling and multilevel modeling, with a few chapters dealing with time-varying covariates, discontinuous and nonlinear change. Part II covers discrete-time and continuous-time survival analysis. If you are conducting a longitudinal study, chances are you will find a technique in this book that suits you just right.
Third, the book is quite deep. Although it gears toward applications of different longitudinal analyses, it is no cakewalk. You need at least some background in multiple regression and multivariate statistics. I think the treatment of mathematics (both concepts and formulas) is just right. In some sections you may need to revisit them often in order to fully understand the subject.

Change is constant in everyday life.Infants crawl and then walk, children learn to read and write, teenagers mature in myriad ways, the elderly become frail and forgetful.Beyond these natural processes and events, external forces and interventions instigate and disrupt change:test scores may rise after a coaching course, drug abusers may remain abstinent after residential treatment. By charting changes over time and investigating whether and when events occur, researchers reveal the temporal rhythms of our lives. Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis is a much-needed professional book for empirical researchers and graduate students in the behavioral, social, and biomedical sciences. It offers the first accessible in-depth presentation of two of today's most popular statistical methods: multilevel models for individual change and hazard/survival models for event occurrence (in both discrete- and continuous-time). Using clear, concise prose and real data sets from published studies, the authors take you step by step through complete analyses, from simple exploratory displays that reveal underlying patterns through sophisticated specifications of complex statistical models. Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis offers readers a private consultation session with internationally recognized experts and represents a unique contribution to the literature on quantitative empirical methods. Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios Review

Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios
Average Reviews:

Most of the "posing guides" I've seen fall into two catagories. There are the "show 'em a thousand pictures of a babe in a swimsuit in various poses" books. I find those totally useless. I'd rather tear pages out of fashion magazines and make my own book than look at the same girl posed a 1000 different ways in the same black swimsuit.
And then there are the books that are obviously done by someone specializing in senior (as in high school senior, not old folks...) pictures with the requisite wooden rail fence poses, the stairstep poses, and... well if you've seen the books you know exactly what I mean. In fact, Amherst, the publisher of this book, has several of them. I'm not knocking them, it's just that they really are not what I'm looking for...
So it was a pleasant surprise to discover Mr. Pegram's book. While he aims it at producing pictures for models portfolios, it's not to hard to figure out that models want to show off exceptional pictures in their portfolios. Thus the poses are contemporary, sexy -- when appropriate, and generally a cut above the run of the mill. Oh, did I mention the models are all female?
If you're expecting the usual 1/3 of the book on how to use a camera, choose lights, and read a light meter... Surprise, surprise... that ain't none of that. God bless Mr. Pegram!
The images are excellent, the models are attractive, the writing is succint and well done, and there is sufficient information that even a grizzled old pro photographer can probably pick up a few pointers.
[...]
Trust me, if you're looking for a posing guide that looks like pictures you'd want to make, take a look at this book.
