Just like the business world, experience is very important. Knowing the right people with the right connections gets you far, but performing professionally takes you even further. So, it is no different in the modeling world. You need experience, the right exposure, and you need to be prepared to be professional in front of the right people. Working with Fortune 500 companies as spokesmodels or as runway or print models for high fashion houses are only a few of the many opportunities you can take. But many of us as the general public ask "How do we get there?" and "Who has those connections?" -- Kali Mitchell in collaboration with SCW Promotion, LLC a National Licensed Model and Talent Agency provide very detailed, real-world advice on becoming a successful working model. Most importantly, they describe how to break into the industry without spending thousands of dollars on photoshoots, agent fees, or comp/zed cards. They teach you exactly how to get paid bookings and continue expanding your modeling career and portfolio. They even talk about the tax benefits of working as a model. Working as a model for four years, I definitely agree that this book has everything you need including industry tips that make a difference not only in how you look, but the overall way in which you present yourself.
This book is also about integrity and respect while you pursue your modeling career. In addition, they describe the many categories and body types suited for professional modeling. Just as you would want to market yourself in the right way as a business professional, so you would want to do so in the right segment of modeling. You're guaranteed a much higher success rate if you are competing in the category that is best suited for your personality and look. Knowing all of the challenges on a first-hand basis, Kali and SCW Promotions really give you the knowledge and share experiences that will save you time and ensure that you are prepared. They give you the facts that ensure you stand out among your competition so that your clients will want to work with you time and again because they know you are reliable and professional. This book helps dispel many of the myths associated with the modeling industry.

How to Become a Working Model is an eye-opener. It targets over 20 different modeling categories. Most having NO HEIGHT REQUIREMENT. There is such a thing as a petite model, a fitness model, a catalog model, etc. Whether you are tall or short - many body types are targeted not just high fashion runway, which is less than 1% of the population. There are over 20 modeling categories. Have you dreamed of being a model but have no idea how to get started? This book is a STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE on how to get into the modeling industry and obtain actual paid bookings. You will learn how to build a real working portfolio rather than paying thousands of dollars for one. What are comp cards? You will learn what really needs to go on a professional model's comp card to get you work. We cover the common myths of modeling and the most common mistake people make that keep them out of the industry. It also covers how to secure a legitimate agency, how to put together a package to submit to castings with submittal letters you can copy out of the book. I read this book straight through last weekend. I could barely put it down. This book really hits home for anyone involved in the fashion industry. I have been involved in fashion for more than 20 years. It's about time someone was brave enough to expose some of the bad dealings of the industry. Hopefully, Mr. Halperin's startling revelations will help make more people aware that it's important to beware of who you get involved with in this business. There are many bad apples out there. I encourage all parents and young models to pick up this book before getting involved in the industry. All your questions of what it's like to be a model and how to choose the right agent will be answered. And of course, you'll be intrigued by some of the horrific experiences some of the top models you see on TV have encountered. The author posed undercover as a model to get all the dirt. And he certainly does not hold back in revealing the truth about our glamorous industry.

The Model Posing Guide For Fashion And Glamour Photography Review

The Model Posing Guide For Fashion And Glamour Photography
Average Reviews:

A quick read for the photographer and model alike. The book hits all the points on preparing for a shoot from the Models perspective. As a photographer, I'm keeping a few on hand to give to newer models - as a way to help them get started. The book has groups and series of poses that the model can practice ahead of the shoot. (It always makes a shoot go smoother when a model can cycle through poses and you only have to help them make fine adjustments.) This book is a great reference for photographers, because you can visually breeze through similar poses to find one that fits what you are looking to capture. All in all, I'm glad someone finally came out with a book just like this! Kudos to the author!

The Professional's Guide to Modeling Review

The Professional's Guide to Modeling
Average Reviews:

This is the best info out there!
As a working commercial photographer I have worked with many models, both seasoned and beginners as well as agencies, reps and managers. I have dealt with a lot of beginners and often wanted to give them a source for no nonsense info about the day-to-day issues they are likely to encounter. I have also over the years read several modeling guides to see which ones I should recommend but most fell short in some way. Not this one.
What's unique about this book is that it doesn't just cover the NYC fashion world. That's the problem with lots of books by supermodels and celebrity agency owners are their experience is a very narrow and often an outdated one that extremely few others could benefit from. This book deals with fashion and commercial modeling in both large and secondary markets. It clearly explains the differences too.
Another unique thing about this book is how much it deals with the Internet and it's effect on the modeling industry, both the good and bad aspects of it. It lays out in no nonsense terms how both agency and freelance models can befit from the net and the brick & mortar world. Its glossary of terms is the most comprehensive I have seen and includes many "net" terms that until now have never been codified into one printed source.
I think the best thing about it is the frank discussion of all the scams and sorta scams out there, how to spot them and how to tell the quasi legit from legit. (Sometimes that can be hard) That alone is worth the read.
If you are looking to get into the modeling world I would get this book and really read it before you spend a dime on photos, comp cards, web site memberships, open calls, ect.
Don't get me wrong there are several good books out there but for the beginning model this is the best.

Different types of agencies, and what to expect from each. Getting an agency (or getting work without one). What is expected of you by clients, casting directors and agencies. and who are all of those people? How go-sees and shoots work, and the paperwork involved. Modeling and the law: agency contracts, copyright and model's rights, including samples of the commonly used forms. A detailed description of many modeling scams, and the myths that surround them. Model safety. Essay that decodes the things said by photographers and agents that don't mean what they say.

I loved this book because it gave me specific advice about all the different types of models, and the specific requirements for each specialty. It had interesting and informative stories, directly from supermodels, agents, and magazine editors. It also had beautiful color photographs illustrating poses, and "behind the scenes" of photoshoots. Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios Review

Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most of the "posing guides" I've seen fall into two catagories. There are the "show 'em a thousand pictures of a babe in a swimsuit in various poses" books. I find those totally useless. I'd rather tear pages out of fashion magazines and make my own book than look at the same girl posed a 1000 different ways in the same black swimsuit.
And then there are the books that are obviously done by someone specializing in senior (as in high school senior, not old folks...) pictures with the requisite wooden rail fence poses, the stairstep poses, and... well if you've seen the books you know exactly what I mean. In fact, Amherst, the publisher of this book, has several of them. I'm not knocking them, it's just that they really are not what I'm looking for...
So it was a pleasant surprise to discover Mr. Pegram's book. While he aims it at producing pictures for models portfolios, it's not to hard to figure out that models want to show off exceptional pictures in their portfolios. Thus the poses are contemporary, sexy -- when appropriate, and generally a cut above the run of the mill. Oh, did I mention the models are all female?
If you're expecting the usual 1/3 of the book on how to use a camera, choose lights, and read a light meter... Surprise, surprise... that ain't none of that. God bless Mr. Pegram!
The images are excellent, the models are attractive, the writing is succint and well done, and there is sufficient information that even a grizzled old pro photographer can probably pick up a few pointers.
[...]
Trust me, if you're looking for a posing guide that looks like pictures you'd want to make, take a look at this book.

Wilhelmina Guide to Modeling Review

Wilhelmina Guide to Modeling
Average Reviews:

I have been an editorial/fashion/runway model for 10 years. This is definetely the best book I have read on the subject. I wish I had been written before I started out, because it would have saved me from some of the pitfalls in the business.
Natasha's writing is short and to the point, -without leaving anything out. It does contain a sample letter you can send to the agencies. It shows you exactly what kind of pictures to send to the agencies, as well. How to dress. What make-up to wear (or not wear). Everything you need to know.
I love her chapter on the foreign markets (London, Milan, Tokyo etc.) because she describes it exactly the way it is.
Another favourite chapter of mine, you get to know how photografers, stylists and designers feel about models....and what they expect from us.
She walks you through everything from A - Z. I can't think of anything she forgot to write about.
Best of Luck.....and go for it.
