(More customer reviews)I loved this book from front to back. It gave me an inside perspective on how black models are treated in the fashion industry. After being brain washed and white washed by dozens of "Vogue," "Glamour," and "Cosmo" magazines, I had lost sight of how beautiful and elegant black models/women are. This is unfortunate but true and can only account for the racist attitudes and standards that Western society (especially America) has against ethnic (African, Asian, Latin, and Native American Indian) beauty. Ethnic beauty is copied and exploited. You can see it in every page of the most popular fashion magazines. I also read Eileen Ford's comment about this book. She was wrong wasn't she. Thank you for writing this book Ms. Summers. It is unquestionably a work of art.

Bad And Beautiful: Inside the Dazzling and Deadly World of Supermodels Review

(More customer reviews)I read this book straight through last weekend. I could barely put it down. This book really hits home for anyone involved in the fashion industry. I have been involved in fashion for more than 20 years. It's about time someone was brave enough to expose some of the bad dealings of the industry. Hopefully, Mr. Halperin's startling revelations will help make more people aware that it's important to beware of who you get involved with in this business. There are many bad apples out there. I encourage all parents and young models to pick up this book before getting involved in the industry. All your questions of what it's like to be a model and how to choose the right agent will be answered. And of course, you'll be intrigued by some of the horrific experiences some of the top models you see on TV have encountered. The author posed undercover as a model to get all the dirt. And he certainly does not hold back in revealing the truth about our glamorous industry.

Statistical Modeling: A Fresh Approach Review

(More customer reviews)I have a couple of shelves full of introductory statistics books, but for various reasons none have ever seemed suitable for my undergraduate biology/ecology students. Daniel Kaplan has now given me a book I can confidently recommend.
This book, as the title suggest, focusses on a modeling/regression approach but still includes an appropriate discussion on null hypothesis testing and anova. This discussion comes near the end of the book once the modeling approach is clearly understood. It could easily be used as a first statistics book (which is how I would use it), but it could also follow a more traditional null hypothesis based first course.
The writing style is clear and easily followed, with just enough explanation to understand why something is being done, but without the mathematical notation that scares so many students away. A geometrical approach is taken to explain some of the more theoretical aspects. It's also just long enough to be useful, without intimidating students with an enormous number of pages. Chapters are generally short and there is a nice logical flow as you work through the book. The practical examples use R, are well thought out, and great care is taken to explain the output.
Probably not the book for an undergraduate statistician, but for other disciplines that need a good understanding of not only statistical practice, but also statistical thinking, I have yet to come across anything better. Indeed I am so impressed with this book that I felt compelled to write my first ever Amazon review.

You can decide for yourself by reading this memoir which covers fashion, art, movies, theater, drugs, gangsters and, oddly linking them all, being and having an extremely original mother. A definite blessing is that Leon Bing is a damn good writer. I felt present at the events of her life, some of which I was glad happened to her and not me.

Posing Techniques for Photographing Model Portfolios Review

(More customer reviews)Most of the "posing guides" I've seen fall into two catagories. There are the "show 'em a thousand pictures of a babe in a swimsuit in various poses" books. I find those totally useless. I'd rather tear pages out of fashion magazines and make my own book than look at the same girl posed a 1000 different ways in the same black swimsuit.
And then there are the books that are obviously done by someone specializing in senior (as in high school senior, not old folks...) pictures with the requisite wooden rail fence poses, the stairstep poses, and... well if you've seen the books you know exactly what I mean. In fact, Amherst, the publisher of this book, has several of them. I'm not knocking them, it's just that they really are not what I'm looking for...
So it was a pleasant surprise to discover Mr. Pegram's book. While he aims it at producing pictures for models portfolios, it's not to hard to figure out that models want to show off exceptional pictures in their portfolios. Thus the poses are contemporary, sexy -- when appropriate, and generally a cut above the run of the mill. Oh, did I mention the models are all female?
If you're expecting the usual 1/3 of the book on how to use a camera, choose lights, and read a light meter... Surprise, surprise... that ain't none of that. God bless Mr. Pegram!
The images are excellent, the models are attractive, the writing is succint and well done, and there is sufficient information that even a grizzled old pro photographer can probably pick up a few pointers.

Trust me, if you're looking for a posing guide that looks like pictures you'd want to make, take a look at this book.

(More customer reviews)I have been an editorial/fashion/runway model for 10 years. This is definetely the best book I have read on the subject. I wish I had been written before I started out, because it would have saved me from some of the pitfalls in the business.
Natasha's writing is short and to the point, -without leaving anything out. It does contain a sample letter you can send to the agencies. It shows you exactly what kind of pictures to send to the agencies, as well. How to dress. What make-up to wear (or not wear). Everything you need to know.
I love her chapter on the foreign markets (London, Milan, Tokyo etc.) because she describes it exactly the way it is.
Another favourite chapter of mine, you get to know how photografers, stylists and designers feel about models....and what they expect from us.
She walks you through everything from A - Z. I can't think of anything she forgot to write about.
