BPMN Method and Style: A levels-based methodology for BPM process modeling and improvement using BPMN 2.0 Review

BPMN Method and Style: A levels-based methodology for BPM process modeling and improvement using BPMN 2.0

I recently faced the task of analysing the notational differences between the BPMN 1.0 and 2.0 specifications, along with creating selection criteria for the use of either. Bruce Silver made this readily possible with his concise and well thought out guide to "BPMN Method and Style".
There is a dearth of practical information and academic research on the 2.0 spec at this point in time, compared with the mountainous 500+ page proposed specification. This book delivers a prescriptive approach to the reader detailing how hierarchical models can be created by domain experts, then be expanded upon by a business process analyst and finally enhanced by a workflow developer for potential execution.
In the author's own words, to try and learn BPMN by reading the specification is akin to trying to learn how to write a story by reading a dictionary. The method for starting with a blank page and modelling the "Happy Path", adding exception flows for semantic correctness, and finally creating an executable model in BPMN 2.0 is given with a well structured approach. Where the spec lacks detail or contains ambiguities with how certain notational elements might, or should, be applied; this book steers the reader with advice on developing a consistent style, which could be adopted into one's own modelling conventions.
If you are searching for guidance from the trenches giving detailed advice and concrete examples, from simple to advanced BPMN notational elements and constructs, then this is the first book you should add to your library.

Practical Management Science (with CD-ROM, Decision Tools and Stat Tools Suite, and Microsoft Project 2003 120 Day Version): Spreadsheet Modeling and Applications (with CD-ROM Update) Review

Unlike most textbooks on OR/MS, Winston and Albright's Practical Management Science's has, at least, three clear possible roles -- each performed superbly. 1. As a self-study text for someone learning / relearning management science in a spreadsheet environment. 2. As a management science student's self-help resource to decipher whatever cryptic text happens to have been required for a course. 3. As a conventional textbook to be chosen by an academic for classroom use.
1. As a self-study text for someone learning / relearning management science in a spreadsheet environment, you'll find PMSc written with obvious and utter mastery of the subject matter, that's commendable but hardly unique. What is unique are the clarity of the presentation and the lucidity of the abundant examples running throughout. In addition, there is thoroughness in the treatment which effectively anticipates virtually any and all sources of confusion which a student of any stripe might suffer. It is, in my view, wholly autodidactic. There is a subset of this type of user: the individual with a job-specific task which defies current familiarity / skill-level. No sweat! Use the inside-the-front cover material as a functional area task locator to identify "look-alike" situations and then proceed to master all which is required by back-tracing the example to similar situations encapsulated within the many interspersed problems -- for each of which there is a complete Excel solution format.
2. As a management science student's self-help resource with which to cope and to decipher whatever cryptic text was assigned for the course. If you find yourself in this far too common dilemma, take heart, help is well and truly at hand. Skim the TOC, find the relevant chapter and enjoy basking in your fast-welling, new-found competence. PMSc will provide ample basis for warranting a celebration at the local "pub" -- or whatever passes for same in your locale.
3. "As a conventional textbook to be chosen by an academic for classroom use" was the category into which I "fell." To my dismay, I recently found myself assigned, on extremely short notice, to teach a comprehensive course on MS/OR. I found our standard two-volume text decidedly off-putting and could only conclude that my students would likely as well. As my background includes accounting, finance, and computer systems, I knew that I wanted a spreadsheet-based textbook for the course. As at most schools, MS is under fire for "relevance" and "accessibility," compounded here through the "mix" of students for my various sections: MBA, EMBA, and MS/MOT (latter all engineering degreed).
Suffice it to say that the classes proved complete successes: the students petitioned the Dean to have an advanced management science course added to the curriculum which I'm teaching this (fall '98) semester. In addition to covering the chapters / chapter sections omitted from the "introductory" course, we're using PMSc as the primary text with Bodily, Carraway, et al's excellent QBA case book for facilitating the integration of MS with finance, marketing, operations, and strategy.
As a sidebar: Most of my MBA students were from one of our "dedicated" MBA programs. These manager / students have apparently provided many of their subordinates with copies of PMSc. Their experience had regularly been that they were using on Monday the material I had "taught" them on Saturday.
As if this weren't enough praise, I'm using PMSc as a supplemental text in my finance courses because of its lucid and extensive coverage of @RISK and for the extensive finance material provided. This is proving extremely popular with my students.
As you might infer, I think that PMSc is without peer as the best and most effective text for learning how to actually perform REAL management science without tears or undue ancillary learning. I've yet to have a student who was not wildly enthusiastic about PMSc (that's not hyperbole) -- when's the last time you've had THAT experience?
I'd be happy to hear from anyone buying this text -- I really WANT to hear from anyone buying this text who is less than completely satisfied.

This text takes an active-learning approach, providing numerous examples and problems so students can practice extensively with a concept before moving on. Four types of problems -- skill-building, skill-extending, modeling, and cases are graded within sections and chapters to help instructors assign homework. Another important feature is the way that the text integrates modeling into all functional areas of business: finance, marketing, operations management using real examples and real data. The text emphasizes modeling over algebraic formulations and memorization of particular models. Shell files are also provided so that instructors can give students as much or as little information as they need.

I use this book for my "Quantitative Methods for Decision Making" class and there is some involvement of mathematics. But it is just easy to understand and to use. Also the methods used here are really sort of fundamental and important. I recommend this book for those who really hate deep mathematical involvement in management science.

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation Review

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Managing Business Complexity' is a great start at bridging the significant academic work in complexity science over recent years to business applications. It provides an introduction to agent-based simulations and an overview of the characteristics and advantages of agents, and walks the reader through two illustrative examples. Such examples are especially helpful to readers with little or no previous experience using agent-based models.
Applications of complexity science to business are still in their infancy. As such, the discussion in the book leans towards the academic, and more pointedly towards programmers rather than business practitioners with scant scientific background. Future editions of this book might benefit from including further business applications, and including the impact to bottom line.
This book is highly recommended as an overview of this exciting subject and its applicability to business situations.

Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS), a way to simulate a large number of choices by individual actors, is one of the most exciting practical developments in business modeling since the invention of relational databases. It represents a new way to understand data and generate information that has never been available before--a way for businesses to view the future and to understand and anticipate the likely effects of their decisions on their markets and industries. It thus promises to have far-reaching effects on the way that businesses in many areas use computers to support practical decision-making.Managing Business Complexity is the first complete business-oriented agent-based modeling and simulation resource. It has three purposes: first, to teach readers how to think about ABMS, that is, about agents and their interactions; second, to teach readers how to explain the features and advantages of ABMS to other people and third, to teach readers how to actually implement ABMS by building agent-based simulations. It is intended to be a complete ABMS resource, accessible to readers who haven't had any previous experience in building agent-based simulations, or any other kinds of models, for that matter. It is also a collection of ABMS business applications resources, all assembled in one place for the first time. In short, Managing Business Complexity addresses who needs ABMS and why, where and when ABMS can be applied to the everyday business problems that surround us, and how specifically to build these powerful agent-based models.

Business Dynamics: Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World with CD-ROM Review

Business Dynamics: Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World with CD-ROM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The field of system dynamics was created in 1956 under the leadership of MIT Professor Jay W. Forrester to evaluate how alternative policies affect growth, stability, fluctuation, and changing behavior in corporations, cities, and countries. Forrester founded the System Dynamics Program in the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management at MIT. John Sterman is currently Director of the System Dynamics Group at MIT.
This text is a summary of the wisdom and knowledge gathered over more than twenty years of research dedicated to the study of practical methods for systems thinking and the dynamic modeling of complex systems. It is well written, easy to understand, and worthy of serious consideration.
I believe the text is destined to become a classic. It is written in a straightforward style and does not require prerequisite knowledge of higher mathematics. Indeed, in the author's words, "one of the strengths of the text is the way it presents system dynamics with a minimum of mathematical formalism. The goal is to develop the reader's intuition and conceptual understanding, without sacrificing the rigor of the scientific method." This goal is achieved well.
The text opens with a succinct and well organized description of approaches to the study of complex systems. It develops a set of principles for successful use of systems dynamics and provides well-written overviews of the Modeling Process and dynamic systems.
It covers the construction of causal loop diagrams and describes their application in a variety of business and engineering examples.
This is one of the best texts in its field for upper division undergraduate courses and graduate programs. It will be useful to many in business, engineering, and science.

Introduction to Management Science: A Modeling and Case Studies Approach with Spreadsheets Review

Introduction to Management Science: A Modeling and Case Studies Approach with Spreadsheets
Average Reviews:

Factors that contributed to a low rating for this book include, a lack of user-friendliness and lengthy case studies. The blue colored wordings (black would be better) can be quite glaring under the lights making it not smoothing to the eyes.
Furthermore, it uses long case studies which could have been shortened by cutting down on the introductions to the companies it made reference to. More focus should be given to concepts at the earlier stage of every section, instead of making the reader running through a lengthy introduction before focusing on the concepts.
Important concepts could also have been left out. One example would be the omission of 'Reduced Cost' under the chapters of Linear Programming and Integer Programming.
However, this book is certainly catered to users of MS Excel. It has in-depth discussions of Excel in areas of Management Science
