(More customer reviews)This is a good book for those seeking an initial view of process and BPEL. The book covers the basics of BPEL profile 1.1, and until chapter 4 is a good resource of information. I don't like books that binds the technology to an specific implementation, and that's the case of the book after chapter 4, it binds examples to Oracle BPEL process servers (which I've already used in production and find it a poor implementation) and Microsoft Biz Talk (never used it). It would be much better if more real world examples could be provided instead of specific providers mechanisms for deploying, creating etc. This should be a readers choice, and the product manuals take care of that. I'm a great fan of the author, have read many of his books, this one had everything to be on my top shell, but, if only there was no more chapters after the 4th.

(More customer reviews)This is a fairly formal presentation of the subject; even though, it is quite easy to follow and does not "dry up". A possible reason for this is the author's use of many straight forward and elementary examples that he creates to paint his rhetoric.
It is evident the he is not only an expert at writing about business process management, but also in spanning the theory of it, and encapsulating that in this concise work. It is also evident that much collaboration was performed with Wil van der Aalst, and others in that group, and so Aalst's book "Workflow Management" co-written by Kees van Hee, fits nicely inside this one. Which is not to say that it is needed, the work stands alone as a definitive source -- perhaps a classic, when those general business folk become a bit more foundational minded.

It is also valuable for project managers and IT professionals working in business process management, since it provides a vendor-independent view on the topic. This book contains five chapters that analyses business tools and techniques. Among these five chapters, one of them named "teaching guide" helps me a lot with my paper in university. It tells much useful information about different types of teaching and how to develop professional training. I found this book in my university's library, but I recommend you to buy a paper book because I believe that will be more helpful.

(More customer reviews)I recently faced the task of analysing the notational differences between the BPMN 1.0 and 2.0 specifications, along with creating selection criteria for the use of either. Bruce Silver made this readily possible with his concise and well thought out guide to "BPMN Method and Style".
There is a dearth of practical information and academic research on the 2.0 spec at this point in time, compared with the mountainous 500+ page proposed specification. This book delivers a prescriptive approach to the reader detailing how hierarchical models can be created by domain experts, then be expanded upon by a business process analyst and finally enhanced by a workflow developer for potential execution.
In the author's own words, to try and learn BPMN by reading the specification is akin to trying to learn how to write a story by reading a dictionary. The method for starting with a blank page and modelling the "Happy Path", adding exception flows for semantic correctness, and finally creating an executable model in BPMN 2.0 is given with a well structured approach. Where the spec lacks detail or contains ambiguities with how certain notational elements might, or should, be applied; this book steers the reader with advice on developing a consistent style, which could be adopted into one's own modelling conventions.
If you are searching for guidance from the trenches giving detailed advice and concrete examples, from simple to advanced BPMN notational elements and constructs, then this is the first book you should add to your library.

The Microguide to Process Modeling in BPMN Review

(More customer reviews)I like the idea the authors had about a micro guide, sometimes these topics can be daunting and offering a book that can be read in a day to get up to speed is a great idea. There are some possible improvements and not necessarily criticisms, the flow of the book could use some improvement, In some chapters a topic is introduced at the beginning but then the authors go off on a tangent though relevant I found myself going back and rereading the start of the chapter thinking I had missed something only to find that topic discussed towards the end. I think the best improvement they could have made was to use consistent real life modeling examples, early in the book the authors suggest they will explore some common archetypes and then list them with participants and sub processes but then use examples like making a PBJ sandwich instead of using any of the processes they mentioned. The authors also introduce what they call the Process Modeling framework which makes sense and is a common approach sadly they describe the PMF sequence but never delve into an example that shows a process being modeled from start to finish, though I followed I think a example would have really helped.
Overall I recommend the book and hopefully the authors will update it, certainly I would consider it as a standard book for our analysts but will wait to see if any of the above get addressed.
