Introductory Management Science : Decision Modeling With Spreadsheets (with CD-ROM) Review

Introductory Management Science : Decision Modeling With Spreadsheets (with CD-ROM)

I use this book for my "Quantitative Methods for Decision Making" class and there is some involvement of mathematics. But it is just easy to understand and to use. Also the methods used here are really sort of fundamental and important. I recommend this book for those who really hate deep mathematical involvement in management science.

The Art of Modeling with Spreadsheets: Management Science, Spreadsheet Engineering, and Modeling Craft Review

The Art of Modeling with Spreadsheets: Management Science, Spreadsheet Engineering, and Modeling Craft

A once useful entree to the spreadsheet modeling literature, this book is now obsolete. The version listed here is copyrighted 2004 but comes with a CD containing release 2000.2 of Crystal Ball which Decisioneering is no longer event supporting. This old version of the software as well as the Advanced Solver add-in has compatibility problems with Windows XP -not to mention Vista, and Wiley does not stand behind the product. Once I loaded the advanced solver, the solver feature no longer produced optimal solutions.
Extremely disappointing to buy a $90 textbook with obsolete software that causes Excel to malfunction and cannot be updated. Impossible to consider this as a class text book. If the publishers will not keep the product current it should be withdrawn from the market, and reputable vendors should at least WARN buyers, if they choose to continue to market and sell this once useful product.

This is the best CGE book on the market. The book explains CGE modeling in a clear, A-Z approach. The author also does an excellent job connecting economic theory to empirical applications of GAMS. I will use this book as my seminal CGE reference and will also use this book for my graduate CGE course. Kudos to the authors for writing such a clear, rigorous, and useful textbook. I wish all textbooks in economics were this useful!!

Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models have been widely used for various economic simulations, such as, trade liberalization, environmental problems, and regulatory and tax reforms. CGE models are powerful but tend to be large-scale and, therefore, often difficult to learn. This book provides a comprehensive A-to-Z guide for CGE models. Focusing on its practical application, readers can learn from the simplest CGE models, and proceed, in a step-by-step manner, to database construction, programming for computation, and developing more elaborated CGE models, which can be applied empirically to actual simulation purposes. Particular emphasis is placed on computer programs of CGE models. Readers can obtain knowledge and skills from which they can develop and operate their own CGE models, and apply them to their research. This book is essential reading for all interested in computational economics, advanced macroeconomics, international trade, regional development, development economics.

Introduction to Management Science: A Modeling and Case Studies Approach with Spreadsheets Review

Factors that contributed to a low rating for this book include, a lack of user-friendliness and lengthy case studies. The blue colored wordings (black would be better) can be quite glaring under the lights making it not smoothing to the eyes.
Furthermore, it uses long case studies which could have been shortened by cutting down on the introductions to the companies it made reference to. More focus should be given to concepts at the earlier stage of every section, instead of making the reader running through a lengthy introduction before focusing on the concepts.
Important concepts could also have been left out. One example would be the omission of 'Reduced Cost' under the chapters of Linear Programming and Integer Programming.
However, this book is certainly catered to users of MS Excel. It has in-depth discussions of Excel in areas of Management Science
