Knowledge Representation and the Semantics of Natural Language (Cognitive Technologies) Review

Knowledge Representation and the Semantics of Natural Language (Cognitive Technologies)

This book has a wealth of solid information about knowledge representation (KR). It is focused on Multinets, an advanced type of semantic network. The author brings years of experience to this subject. The book deals thoroughly with many aspects of KR such as relationships, categories, generalization, real vs hypothetical, cardinality, and variability, just to name a few. Although the book is focused on Multinets, the concepts should be relevant to other knowledge representation schemes.
Frequent natural language statements clarify the issues under discussion. For example, here are two of the statements on page 49 that illustrate different types of information that can be communicated by "is".
"'A bachelor is an adult unmarried man.' (Relation EQU), 'The cherry is red.' (Relation PROP), . . ."
In other words, the first "is" links equivalent ideas, the second "is" indicates "red" as a property.
The book also contains numerous, well designed, helpful diagrams.
Unfortunately, the jargon is very thick, and difficult to navigate. For example, from page 20: "As already mentioned, the arcs of the semantic network have to be considered as epistemologically and cognitively justified categories which function as fundamental deep semantic relations in the framework of meaning representation." After reading this sentence several times, I think part of what it means is "the arcs of semantic networks should match actual deep semantic relations". But I'm not sure. I frequently find myself reading sentences several times, then moving on, only partly satisfied.
If you can get past the jargon, the book contains a thorough, solidly supported treatment of the knowledge representation of natural language.
Perhaps someone with more prior experience with knowledge representation would find the book more approachable.
Based on the quantity of information, the strong relevance to knowledge representation and the clarifying examples, I give this a generous 4 star rating. However, I'm worried that some readers will find the jargon so impenetrable that the book would lose most of its value to them.

The book presents an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge representation and the treatment of semantic phenomena of natural language, which is positioned between artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, and cognitive psychology. The proposed method is based on Multilayered Extended Semantic Networks (MultiNets), which can be used for theoretical investigations into the semantics of natural language, for cognitive modeling, for describing lexical entries in a computational lexicon, and for natural language processing (NLP).Part I deals with fundamental problems of semantic knowledge representation and semantic interpretation of natural language phenomena. Part II provides a systematic description of the representational means of MultiNet, one of the most comprehensive and thoroughly specified collections of relations and functions used in real NLP applications.MultiNet is embedded into a system of software tools comprising a workbench for the knowledge engineer, a semantic interpreter translating natural language expressions into formal meaning structures, and a workbench for the computer lexicographer. The book has been used for courses in artificial intelligence at several universities and is one of the cornerstones for teaching computational linguistics in a virtual electronic laboratory.

Business Modeling: A Practical Guide to Realizing Business Value (The MK/OMG Press) Review

Business Modeling: A Practical Guide to Realizing Business Value (The MK/OMG Press)

I enjoyed reading this book. The tone was light and the same detailed real-world style examples continued throughout the book. The four types of business models covered were explained simply and clearly. Using the example diagrams, I have begun to create my own business models. Having done business and technical modeling on and off since 1991, this book was a great introduction to some new types of models, the emerging standards, and some excellent tips on techniques for activities that take place around the models such as workshops and simulation. I appreciated the non-technical way that the models were presented, such that both a business-person and a hard-core techie could both get value from the same model. The authors' website promises to provide more details, including updates on tools, and they have been kind in helping me to identify some available tools that might fit my needs.
I am certainly in a better position to incorporate business models into my new and existing business ventures from studying this book.

As business modeling becomes mainstream, every year more and more companies and government agencies are creating models of their businesses. But creating good business models is not a simple endeavor. Business modeling requires new skills. Written by two business modeling experts, this book shows you how to make your business modeling efforts successful. It provides in-depth coverage of each of the four distinct business modeling disciplines, helping you master them all and understand how to effectively combine them. It also details best practices for working with subject matter experts. And it shows how to develop models, and then analyze, simulate, and deploy them. This is essential, authoritative information that will put you miles ahead of everyone who continues to approach business modeling haphazardly. * Provides in-depth coverage of the four business modeling disciplines:process modeling, motivation modeling, organization modeling, and rules modeling.* Offers guidance on how to work effectively with subject matter experts and how to run business modeling workshops.* Details today's best practices for building effective business models, and describes common mistakes that should be avoided.* Describes standards for each business modeling discipline.* Explains how to analyze, simulate, and deploy business models.* Includes examples both from the authors' work with clients and from a single running example that spans the book.

Excel Data Analysis: Modeling and Simulation Review

Excel Data Analysis: Modeling and Simulation

I was a graduate student of Professor Guerrero at The College of William and Mary and have to recommend this book. For those unfortunates who did not have him as an instructor, this is a book that gives you the experience of spending time with him in the classroom. The practical application of Excel as a modeling and simulation tool is delivered in a conversational style that engages the reader and occasionally generates a chuckle. Yes, a chuckle in a text that includes the words Excel, Modeling and Simulation in the title. However, inbetween the chuckles is solid theory and application. It's a clever text.
I would recommend this book if only for the discussion of the feng shui of worksheet development - as users, we sometimes don't think through the design of the excel workbook. We build and link, build and link, build and link...
So, Senior Brain, I put my workbook in your hands...

This book is written for the students and practitioners who are looking for a single introductory Excel-based resource that covers three essential business and analytical skills-Data Analysis, Business Modeling, and Simulation of Complex Problems. The focus of the book is clearly on analysis of problems for decision making, yet detailed explanations regarding how to use Excel tools are provided. After many years of teaching and consulting, it is abundantly clear to me that for most students, a good example is worth its weight in gold. This book contains many excellent examples in each chapter, some simple and others more complex, and there is an abundance of exhibits to guide the student through the maze of steps necessary for each analysis. The content is quite diverse: data presentation - the Feng Shui of spreadsheets, effective communication and collaboration, data preparation - import, scrub, manipulate data, data analysis - statistical methods: descriptive, inferential, and predictive, Design of Experiments, modeling - deterministic, probabilistic, What-if, Scenarios, simulation - quantifying uncertainty, Monte Carlo Simulation, optimization - constrained, Linear Programming, non-linear models, Goal Seek.Couple these features with detailed discussions of how to realistically organize and extract insight from complex problems, and I believe you have a unique educational combination in one book.
