As the author of the HMS Warrior Practicum books, let me say that the publisher is both Pier Books and Dupont Communications. This Practicum is a series of 5 volumes, with the first four being available through Pier Books Inc., Piermont, NY. The final and fifth volume will be available sometime in 2007. The books are published with two types of binding--1) Comb binding, and 2) Leather bound, which is a limited , numbered and signed edition for each of the volumes. Although the subject is the construction of a seventy-four gun ship of the line, the sequence of construction as well as the techniques used in construction reflect the art of the shipwright of the 17th and 18th centuries. Therefore, the builder will find this series of books applicable to all types of wooden ships. Unique to the style of the author, all the instructional text are accompanied by Photo Essays, and all the drafts or patterns drawn to exacting scale. The Practicum covers such topics as the construction of the keel, the stem and stern post. The frames and all the deck timbers as well as the detailing unique for each deck are presented in exhausting detail. Quite notable are the extensive lessons for painting friezes on the ship, together with hundreds of pages and photos detailing each and every step in carving the figurehead and all other figures in the stern and gallery areas. It is the style of the author to take nothing for granted, and therefore, beginners to ship model construction will be pleased to have such detail of instruction and presentation. For those who are advanced builders, there are also challenging aspects of constructing this beautiful English warship.

This is the worst DB design book that I've come across. The first few chapters is supposed to 'guide' you through the db design process, but the example is too lengthy and not to the point. The concepts that is to be explained is illustrated by contrived(using the author's own word) examples. Explanation is confusing. Luckily, I got this from a library and nothing to lose

This work outlines fundamental concepts such as logical and physical modelling, normalization and denormalization, and relates these ideas to advanced platforms including distributed homogenous database, multidatabase and federated database architectures. It aims to give the reader a solid grasp of multi-dimensional analysis techniques for on-line analytical processing (OLAP) and object-oriented database architectures, and learn how basic modelling and design techniques are used every day in real-world products such as CASE tools, relational database management systems, and object database management systems.

Particle Modeling (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology) Review

Particle Modeling (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: I liked very much this book. It is very well written and easy to read. If you don't like fortran, no matter!! I developed a Matlab code from the explanations on the first two chaps. The subjects covered (from fluid flow and solid deformations to special relativistic motions) are well documented and plenty of examples, making them very easy to follow. I've tryed the method, and I find it a very good one to simulate fragmentation flows.
Cons:The references provided are very good (they're a lot, as well!), but I think that they're not enogh linked with the text. Also, it will be interesting if the book devote a little more emphasis in fluid flow... the book fails (as far as I've seen all the literature in particle modelling using this method fails too) to describe a way to calculate pressure.
Summarizing, you'll find this book is worth your bucks!

This book is one of the most comprehensive on its subject that I've ever seen. Useful for Art Teachers, Artists, Art Historians and anyone with a healthy interest in the processes involved in the creation of three-dimensional works of art (a large scope of study undoubtedly). I wholeheartedly recommend this book, as it is well written and well illustrated with great attention to detail. Not only does it contain pictures of artwork, but has step-by-step explanations, with accompanying photographs, of the various processes by which these works of art are created. This book also contains an excellent glossary and index. This is an ideal book for anyone interested in three-dimensional art.

Remote Sensing for Landscape Ecology: New Metric Indicators for Monitoring, Modeling, and Assessment of Ecosystems (Mapping Science) Review

Remote Sensing for Landscape Ecology: New Metric Indicators for Monitoring, Modeling, and Assessment of Ecosystems (Mapping Science)
Average Reviews:

Working with the development of indices/indicators for sustainability and structural diversity of forests, I find this little book highly inspiring. Wanting to use some of the metrics that are implemented in e.g. Fragstats and r.le for GRASS - it was nice to find out that someone had already taken a critical view into the opportunities and pitfalls of this approach. The disadvantages of the "contagion" and "fractal dimension" indices are demonstrated be use of diffent land cover data sets derived from Remote Sensing sources, mostly Landsat TM. Two new metrics are proposed, and (small wonder) they are demonstrated to work much better than contagion and f.d. It is nice to see a book that really focuses on a specific subject, although it would have been nice with a review of some more indices and a discussion of other ways to evaluate landscape structure from RS (and GIS) data.

This book presents a new set of metrics that allows remotely sensed data to be used effectively in landscape ecology. This groundbreaking new work is the first to present new metrics for remote sensing of landscapes and demonstrate how they can be used to yield more accurate analyses for GIS studies. It assesses the current state of the field and how remote sensing and landscape metrics have been used to date and explains how some of the traditional metrics were developed and how they can fail in landscape studies. The new metrics are introduced and their benefits and uses are then explained. This is the first single source for complete background information and instructions on using the new metrics.

My study habits and high school curriculum (early 1950s) did not prepare me for college calculus, so I was limited to taking applied statistics courses as an undergraduate (6 in all), all before the days of computers. I have used statistics all during my professional career and constantly searched for new books to refresh my memory or to learn new statistical techniques. Intro Stats by Velleman and De Veaux is by far the best text I have ever encountered. It is written in an easily understandable style, is well structured, and very user friendly. I recommend it highly.

Stats: Modeling the World is a modern book in many ways. It carries a core focus on statistical thinking throughout the text, emphasizing how statistics helps us to understand the world. And it utilizes both graphing calculator and computer software technologies in doing Statistics. The topic order is designed to ensure that each new topic fits into the growing structure of understanding that students build. The mantra of Think, Show, and Tell is repeated in every chapter, emphasizing the importance of thinking about a statistics question and reporting our findings. The authors know that the best way to teach is with humor. The book is fun to read. And students report that they actually read it.
