Essential Computational Fluid Dynamics Review

By observing history of CFD textbooks, one notices that it almost becomes a trend CFD books getting thicker and thicker. Many authors want their books as detailed and broader as possible. The intention is obviously good. But for many CFD beginners, the information from those comprehensive text books is just overwhelming. Some students even got discouragement by complex expression or nomenclature such as tensor quantities or certain mathematical spaces, etc. Therefore there is a need to have a book easy to read and understand from basic CFD concept to detailed numerical procedures representing up-to-date subject advancement, in the meantime to cover most important theories and applications. Dr. Zikanov's book finds itself in this niche position. From teaching experience in or out of classroom, I observed most students like this book and benefit lots out of that.
So I strongly recommend this textbook for those trying to understand and implement CFD in a relatively short period of time. That includes fluids majored undergraduate student in their senior level and 1st/2nd year graduate students, or non-fluids majored graduate students.

This book serves as a complete and self-contained introduction to the principles of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis. It is deliberately short (at approximately 300 pages) and can be used as a text for the first part of the course of applied CFD followed by a software tutorial. The main objectives of this non-traditional format are: 1) To introduce and explain, using simple examples where possible, the principles and methods of CFD analysis and to demystify the `black box' of a CFD software tool, and 2) To provide a basic understanding of how CFD problems are set and which factors affect the success and failure of the analysis.Included in the text are the mathematical and physical foundations of CFD, formulation of CFD problems, basic principles of numerical approximation (grids, consistency, convergence, stability, and order of approximation, etc), methods of discretization with focus on finite difference and finite volume techniques, methods of solution of transient and steady state problems, commonly used numerical methods for heat transfer and fluid flows, plus a brief introduction into turbulence modeling. A solutions manual will be provided for instructor's use.

Modeling, analysis and simulation of chemical processes is increasingly central to the work of chemical engineers -- but it is rarely covered in depth in process design guides. This book fills that gap. It is a comprehensive introduction to process modeling and dynamics using the powerful MATLAB and SIMULINK analysis tools.Start by understanding the rationale for process modeling, and why it is becoming so critically important. Then, review all the fundamental numerical techniques involved, including algebraic equations and numerical integration. Walk through linear systems analysis in detail, learning how to linearize non-linear models, solve linear nth Order ODE models, work with Laplace transforms and transfer function analysis, and much more. Finally, learn how to use today's increasingly-important non-linear techniques, such as phase plane analysis, quadratic maps bifurcation behavior, and analysis of chaotic behavior via Lorenz equations. For all chemical engineers, from Ph.D. professionals to non-degreed technicians and students.

Numerical Simulation in Fluid Dynamics: A Practical Introduction (Monographs on Mathematical Modeling and Computation) Review

Numerical Simulation in Fluid Dynamics: A Practical Introduction (Monographs on Mathematical Modeling and Computation)

I found this book to be a a very good reference for the development of my first simple finite difference code for the solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
It is not extremely detailed in terms of all the methods exsisting in computational fluid dynamics, but it gives you those information that for a beginner might be hard to find. Good practical examples and a detail explanation on the development of a N-S solver also for FREE SURFACE problems.
Practical things as writing a makefile or how to set your code environment are explained aside of the mathematical analysis of the numerical methods involved.
I highly reccommend this book to those who study the subject but never put into practice that knowledge.
The practical examples are written in C.

In this translation of the German edition, the authors provide insight into the numerical simulation of fluid flow. Using a simple numerical method as an expository example, the individual steps of scientific computing are presented: the derivation of the mathematical model; the discretization of the model equations; the development of algorithms; parallelization; and visualization of the computed data. In addition to the treatment of the basic equations for modeling laminar, transient flow of viscous, incompressible fluids - the Navier-Stokes equations - the authors look at the simulation of free surface flows; energy and chemical transport; and turbulence. Readers are enabled to write their own flow simulation program from scratch. The variety of applications is shown in several simulation results, including 92 black-and-white and 18 color illustrations. After reading this book, readers should be able to understand more enhanced algorithms of computational fluid dynamics and apply their new knowledge to other scientific fields.

This is a good follow-on book to Krenk's book on beams, columns & cables. The total and updated Lagrangian formulations are covered. Topics include bars, beam-columns, and solids. Requires a great deal of continuum mechanics knowledge to understand. Would be good for a graduate course in nonlinear FEM analysis of structures.

This book presents a theoretical treatment of nonlinear behavior of solids and structures in such a way that it is suitable for numerical computation, typically using the Finite Element Method. Starting out from elementary concepts, the author systematically uses the principle of virtual work, initially illustrated by truss structures, to give a self-contained and rigorous account of the basic methods. The author illustrates the combination of translations and rotations by finite deformation beam theories in absolute and co-rotation format, and describes the deformation of a three-dimensional continuum in material form. A concise introduction to finite elasticity is followed by an extension to elasto-plastic materials via internal variables and the maximum dissipation principle. Finally, the author presents numerical techniques for solution of the nonlinear global equations and summarizes recent results on momentum and energy conserving integration of time-dependent problems. Exercises, examples and algorithms are included throughout.

Process Control: Modeling, Design and Simulation Review

Process Control: Modeling, Design and Simulation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This book successfully teaches how to analyze dynamic chemical processes and develop automatic control strategies to operate them safely and economically. Rather than simply present theory topics and develop analytical solutions, this textbook uses "interactive learning" through computer-based simulation exercises, employing for this the very popular "Matlab" engineering software package, and the "Simulink" block-diagram simulation environment. Introductions to both "Matlab" and "Simulink" are included in the book.
Each chapter of the book is followed by a series of "learning modules" that serve several purposes: some focus on software tools, while others focus on particular control problems.
An introduction to process control and instrumentation is presented in chapter 1. The development and use of models is very important in control systems engineering, and fundamentals models are developed in chapter 2, including the steady-state solution and linearization to form steady-state models. Chapter 3 focuses on the dynamic behavior of linear systems, starting with state space models and then covering transfer function-based models in detail. Chapter 4 covers the development of empirical models, including continuous and discrete transfer function models.
Chapter 5 provides a detailed introduction to feedback control, developing the basics of feedback systems, PID controllers, and methods of analyzing closed-loop stability. Chapter 6 presents methods for controller tuning. Frequency response analysis techniques, important for determining control system robustness, are presented in chapter 7.
Model-based control leads to improved control loop performance, and one of the clearest model-based techniques (Internal Model Control o IMC) is presented in chapter 8. The PID controller remains the most widely used controller in industry, so chapter 9 is very valuable since it shows how to convert internal model controllers to classical feedback PID controllers.
Chapter 10 develops two widely used control strategies: Cascade and feed-forward control. Chapter 11 presents auto-tuning and gain scheduling, two methods used to deal with poor performance due to changing operating conditions and poor tuned control loops. The phenomenon of reset windup and the development of anti-reset windup strategies are also presented in this chapter.
Chapter 12 presents the split-range, selective, and override control strategies, which are used when we need the control loop to be able of switching between manipulated inputs or select from several measured outputs. Chapter 13 deals with the effect of control loops interactions, while the design of multivariable controllers is developed in chapter 14.
Chapter 15 presents the challenging tasks encountered when developing Plant-wide optimization and control schemes. Chapter 16 presents the most widely applied advanced control strategy: Model Predictive Control (MPC).
Even though the book is designed for Chemical Engineering students, I truly believe that this text would also be suitable for industrial practitioners and students in mechanical, nuclear, industrial, and electrical engineering. I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control who has been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. My academic background is in electrical and electronics engineering (I am an Electronic Engineer), not in chemical engineering as might be the case of the usual reader of this book, but working in the Oil & Gas Industry all this time, I have been dealing with Chemical-Process Control issues in a day-to-day basics. I found this book to be a very useful reference and refresher to gain a better understanding of Modern Process Control Applications.
If you are a practitioner of Process Control you may want to consider also "Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Fourth Edition, Volume Two: Process Control and optimization" by Bela Liptak, for its practical and comprehensive coverage of Process Control.

This book was the text for my undergraduate control course. It gave me a better background in process control than the other books I purchased to supplement my learning. I highly recommend this book over others such as Marlin.
Ogunnaike and Ray covers subjects such as root locus methods, tunings using frequency methods, and digital control.
Dr. Ogunnaike is also an excellent lecturer, so if you would like to take the course directly from him enroll at the University of Delaware - its well worth it.
I also recommend Essentials of Process Control by William Luyben to provide a good qualitative background in process control.
